The End of an Era

the-end-of-an-era

Here I am just starting a blog, and I am talking about the end of an era? For me, it is.

When I decided to become a surface pattern designer, I wasn’t sure where to start. I sent an email to Jocelyn Proust, a very successful Australian surface pattern designer, whose work I love. Jocelyn very kindly suggested I look up a UK company called Make It In Design. This changed everything for me. Three years later, I have learnt such an incredible amount from the Make It In Design team and their industry icon guest teachers.

There are many courses in Surface Pattern Design available online, so what makes them different? Community. From the very beginning, the Facebook groups and live Webinars, allowed genuine feedback and conversation with industry experts and other designers. Creative people are naturally critical of their own work. Having experts and your peers give advice and support, without an agenda, has allowed me, and many others, tremendous growth. It has allowed us to spread our wings.

You may have noticed I have been using some past tense. Sadly, after thirteen years, Make It In Design is closing down on the 31st December 2024. Not for any awful reasons. Rachael Taylor and Beth Kempton, and the wonderful team, are moving on to new adventures. I am extremely grateful for all they have given me.

But they are not done quite yet. Their online self-paced and packed full of the good stuff courses are available at 80% off now. My advice is to enroll in what you can and download everything!
