Hi there! Today I want to share with you something that I’m very passionate about: surface pattern design. You might be wondering what that is, and I don’t blame you. It’s not a very common term, but trust me, you see it everywhere. Let me break it down for you.
Surface pattern design is the art of creating beautiful prints and patterns to decorate all kinds of products. You know those cute floral mugs you have in your kitchen? Or those funky geometric pillows on your couch? Or those stylish scarves and dresses in your closet? Those are all examples of surface pattern design. It’s basically adding some fun and flair to everyday objects.
There are different ways to create surface pattern designs, and different types of designs for different purposes. Some designs are made to fit a specific shape or size, like a T-shirt or a greeting card. These are called placement prints, and they usually stand out as the main feature of the product. Some designs are made to repeat endlessly, like wallpaper or fabric. These are called seamless repeats, and they create a continuous pattern that covers the whole surface. Some designs are made to match a specific garment or product, like a dress or a shoe. These are called engineered prints, and they are carefully designed to fit the shape and style of the item.
Surface pattern designers can use various methods and tools to create their designs. They can draw or paint by hand, using pencils, pens, brushes, watercolors, etc. They can use digital tools, like tablets, software, scanners, etc. They can use photography, collage, papercut, cyanotype, block printing, screen printing, and more. The possibilities are endless!
Surface pattern designers also need to consider how their designs will look on different materials and products. They need to think about the scale, the composition, the colour, and the mood of their designs. They need to make sure their designs suit the product they are decorating, and that they appeal to their target audience.
So now you know what surface pattern design is, and why I love it so much. It’s a creative and versatile field that allows me to express myself and make the world a more colorful place.
